Botanical Description 21

Lantana camara is a small perennial shrub which can grow to around 2 meter tall and form dense thickets in a variety of environments. This is a large scrambling evergreen shrub and 1.2-2.4 meter high

Common Ethnobotanical Use 22

The plant is used as vulnerary, diaphoretic, carminative and antispasmodic; Hot water is given in tetanus, rheumatism and malaria; much used in atony of abdominal viscera. Leaves are used for the treatment of measles, malaria and tetanus in Khagrachari.Some studies showed that, ethanolic extract of the leaves possess good antibacterial and poor antifungal activity. Alkaloid fraction of the leaves lowers blood pressure, accelerates deep respiration and causes shivering in dogs. It stimulates intestinal movements and inhibits uterine motility in rats.L. camara has also been used in traditional herbal medicines for treating a variety of ailments, including cancer, skin itches, leprosy, rabies, chicken pox, measles, asthma and ulcers. There are also some scientific studies which have shown beneficial effects of L .camara, such as one showed that an extract from the plant reduced ulcer development in rats.
